Villa Mondragone

Town: MONTE PORZIO CATONE

It is the greatest of the baroque villas. Its wood consists of pine trees, olive trees, cypresses, very old ilexes, and bushes of styrax officinalis.

Area's Natural Characteristics
In this wood it is possible to see plants of ilexes and bushes of styrax officinalis. This plant can have the size of a small tree, reaching an height of 7-8 metres. The greatest plants of this kind finds along the enclosure wall. The styrax officinalis, a shrubby plant, has oval leaves and sweet-scented white flowers, and it grows only in Lazio (Monti Lucretili and Castelli Romani) and in Campania. Experts do not agree on its origin: probably this plant comes from Balkans and from Aegeus and it was introduced in Italy by the Romans as a decorative plant or probably it is an heritage of more ancient ages. According to the Regional Law 19/09/1974 it is protected and any action that could damage it is strictly forbidden.

Place
The villa's entrance finds along the road that from Monte Porzio Catone leads to Frascati, near the Barco Borghese.
