Doganella muddy land

Town: ROCCA PRIORA

Within Rocca Priora’s territory there was the Doganella lake which was dried up during the 30s. Of this large basin there are now only muddy meadows and a series of canals, always full of water, therefore there are a lot of amphibians, among which a rare brown reddish frog, that chooses this land to reproduce. This lake was dried up in 1935 to build the homonymous waterworks.
This area belongs to the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani as a natural reserve. It is 53-hectare-wide.

Area's Natural Characteristics
There are a lot of amphibians that choose this place to reproduce, among which it is worth remembering a rare brown reddish frog, that when it does not reproduce, jumps in the nearby woods; the toad and the green frog, the newt with spots and the newt with the crest. This area is a great attraction also for migratory birds: herons, piro piro, and snipes. The thick hawthorns’ bushes with their purple fruits host during winter flocks of migrants coming from northern regions: turdus pilaris, thrushes, together with hawfinches, chaffinches, and mistletoe thrushes.
