Maschio d'Ariano

Town: LARIANO

The woody peak of this mount is characterized by various caduceus trees and it is a very interesting example of how the Castelli Romani's original forests were before the human intervention. The panorama from this place enables you to see the surroundings mountains and valley. This area belongs to the Parco Regionale dei Castelli Romani as a 22,5-hectare-wide natural reserve.

Area's Natural Characteristics
The woods on the summit of this mount consists of trees which in the past were typical of the Colli Albani area. Among the arboreal and shrubby plants there are: the turkey oaks, the lindens, the maples, the common beech, the fraxinus ornus, the English oaks, the hazels, the black hornbeams, and the fusaria or berretta del prete. Among the herbaceous species there are: the anemone, the dentaria and the asphodel.
The Fauna consist of a few species, which are typical of the coppice, i.e. very small animals not easy to see, except for the birds such as the cuckoo, with its call sounding as its name, and the picus virdis. The cuckoo is a grey, or brownish bird, whose size is similar to that of a pigeon. It parasitizes other birds, laying its eggs in the others' nest. The adoptive parents will sit on the eggs, and will bring up the chicks. The picus virdis, whose size is similar to that of the blackbird, has green feathers which are slightly yellow on its rump. It is an unusual woodpecker, as it looks for insects - above all ants - on the ground, and excavate nesting cavities.
