Town: VELLETRI
Travelling on the road to Cori, near the Casale quarter, below the southern
slopes of Monte Artemisio, there is a luxuriant and green cork
oak among bushes, vineyards, and orchards. The peculiarity of
this tree is that it is an hybrid of two different species:
turkey oak and cork oak. It has turkey oak-shaped leaves which
are not caduceus.
Area's Natural Characteristics
This tree is an hybrid of two oaks: the turkey oak, a tree with
caduceus leaves and the Cork oak, an evergreen tree. It reaches
an height of 20 metres and a girth of one metre. The leaves
of this trees are evergreen as that of the Cork oak but they
have the shape of the Turkey oak’s leaves and the trunk
poor in cork. It finds along the road flanked by vineyards,
olive groves and farmhouses, whose gardens are characterized
by the presence of camellias, an ornamental plant coming from
Asia, which in this area has found its natural habitat. The
camellias plants are so numerous, that the town of Velletri
organizes a feast to celebrate it in March: “La festa
delle Camelie”.
Place
In order to see this cork oak, from Velletri cross the road
leading to Lariano, and after the graveyard turn to the right
