Grottaferrata> History's notes

In the 5th century a little village was built on the ruins of a great Roman villa towering over the deep valley. Its name is due to a sepulchre enclosed by an iron railing, namely the ‘Crypta Ferrata’.

Grottaferrata is one of the most recent towns of the Castelli Romani as it developed in the 19th century. In the past this place was characterized only by the presence of the huge structure of the abbey founded by San Nilo. In its territory however there are numerous ruins of Roman villas, of medieval fortifications, and of villas built during the Renaissance.
